Desert winters are mild compared with much of the country, so most Southern Nevada pools are not closed the way they are in colder climates. But freezing nights do happen, and a little preparation helps protect your plumbing and equipment.
Freezing Nights Can Catch People Off Guard
Clark County officials note that freezing temperatures in Southern Nevada can take people by surprise, and that a temperature of 32 degrees or less in the desert can freeze pipes and cause them to burst. The County recommends checking the National Weather Service forecast for Southern Nevada at weather.gov.
Keep Water Moving When a Freeze Is Forecast
Clark County’s cold-weather tips advise running your pool’s water circulation system when freezing or near-freezing temperatures are forecast, and covering exposed pool pipes.
If your pool has automation, ask whether freeze protection is set up. Hayward explains that its controllers can turn outputs on automatically when freezing temperatures are detected.
A Simple Winter Checklist
- Confirm freeze protection is enabled, or plan to run the pump during freeze warnings
- Insulate or cover exposed plumbing at the equipment pad
- Keep fences, gates and locks in good repair; Clark County reminds residents to maintain drowning-prevention barriers year-round
- Follow your equipment manufacturer’s guidelines for winter operation
- Keep testing and balancing water chemistry even when you swim less
Use a Cover to Cut Evaporation
Evaporation does not stop in winter. The Southern Nevada Water Authority says pool covers reduce evaporation by 90 percent, limit windblown debris and conserve energy. A cover can be especially useful if you heat a spa or pool in cooler months.
Don’t Forget Your Irrigation Schedule
From November 1 through February 28, SNWA’s mandatory watering restrictions limit landscape irrigation to one assigned day per week, and Sunday watering is prohibited. Adjusting your irrigation clock also helps keep overspray and runoff away from the pool deck.
Use the Off-Season to Plan
Cooler months are a good time to look at equipment that has been struggling, or to start planning a remodel or new pool before next season. If you have noticed leaks, noisy equipment or other issues, Clarity can evaluate them.
